On June
5, 1985 the American Flowers Family presented a memorial to Captain John Flower II at the family church
of Saint Dunstan and All Saints', Stepney. The memorial was dedicated
by the Archbishop of Canterbury in the presence of members of the Flowers Family and a representative of Her Majesty Queen
Elizabeth II. The story of this memorial is told in Flowers Chronicles in all its rich detail. The Flowers
Family has had a close connection with this ancient parish church since before 1590, during the reign of the first Queen Elizabeth.
The Flowers
Family Settled plantations on James River in Virginia beginning
in 1640. Since that time they have played significant roles in the development of America. Henry Flowers, a grandson of Captain John Flower II, helped to establish
a settlement on the Nottoway River in western
Isle of Wight County, Virginia (which became Courtland and
Southhampton County).
Flowers Bridge was the first bridge over the Nottoway at Courtland, and Flowers Church (1734) was the forerunner of
St. Luke's Episcopal Church at Courtland. Until the time of the American Revolution the Flowers Family were strong members
of the Church of England. Since that time they have been leading members of a variety of other faiths.
The men
and women profiled in this book are all direct descendants of our first American born ancestor, Henry Flowers and his wife,
Jane Underwood Flowers of Virginia. Their sons formed the major branches of the extended Flowers Family in the South, and
the history of each branch is told in vivid detail after many long years of careful genealogical and historical research.
You will
be interested in the individuals of the family, great and small, who have played their role in the building of the Nation.
Here you will find soldiers of the American Revolution, War of 1812, the Mexican War, the Civil War, both World Wars, the
Korean War and Viet Nam. In each case members of the family made significant contributions and, in some cases, were highly
decorated for their services to the Nation.
This is
a story of the men and women of our family: civic and social leaders, university and college presidents and administrators,
judges, physicians, bankers, historians, writers, artists, outstanding leaders in business, corporation presidents, congressment,
legislators, officers of the state and nation, members of the Diplomatic Corps (including an American ambassador), horticulturists
and farmers, large and small.
